How to spot a cash-grab

Custom content is the easiest kind to monetise, because the developer decides how rare the best item is — and can move that line whenever revenue is slow. Five things to check before you invest an account:

• The donate store. Open it first. If the strongest gear in the game is behind real money and nowhere else, that's the whole design.
• A changelog with dates. A real project ships updates and timestamps them. No dated changelog means no real development.
• Discord age. A server spun up last month with a "huge community" is a claim, not a fact — check when the Discord was created.
• Off-peak population. Log in at an odd hour. A custom server lives or dies on its player base; empty at 4am means thin.
• Wipe history. Find out whether the server has wiped saves before. A history of wipes tells you how much your time is worth to them.

Why custom servers

One reason: content past the wall where OSRS stops. For a player who's already done everything the real game offers, custom is the only category that keeps adding new bosses, tiers and systems to chase.

What it costs you

Two things. Nothing you know transfers — you relearn the game from zero. And a custom server is only as permanent as its developer: if it shuts down, your account and everything in it goes with it. Weigh both before sinking weeks into one.
