Pre-EOC RSPS — What 317 and 718 Actually Mean

Pre-EoC means the game before one specific update. In November 2012 RuneScape shipped the Evolution of Combat, which replaced the old click-to-attack system with abilities and an action bar and split the game's history in two. Everything before that patch is "pre-EoC" — and that's the era these servers rebuild.

This is the one page here about the technical foundation rather than the content on top of it. You'll see numbers like 317 and 718 attached to these servers: those are client revisions — the build the client is based on — not the age of the content. A 718 server can run 2020-era content on a 2012 client. So the number tells you how combat feels and which era the client comes from, not what you'll find inside.

We rank servers based on active players and growth, not just votes.

317 vs 718 — the revision table

Revision Client era Combat What it usually means
317 ~2006 Classic click combat The lightest base, and by far the most popular foundation for custom servers
718 ~2012 Pre-EoC legacy Later skills and bosses, on a heavier client

The revision is the client's starting point, not a promise about content. Two 718 servers can feel completely different depending on what the developer built on top. Read a revision as "here's the combat and interface you'll get," then look separately at what content sits on it.

Why pre-EoC

One thing defines this category: the combat system players remember from 2007–2012. No abilities, no action bar — you click your target and your gear and prayers decide the fight. If that's the RuneScape you played, no OSRS or EoC server reproduces it; only pre-EoC does.

Before you pick a pre-EoC server

  • Match the revision to what you want. 317 is lighter and custom-friendly; 718 carries later legacy content and a heavier client. Neither is "better" — they're different starting points.
  • Don't read the revision as the content era. Ask what's actually built on top before judging the server by its number.
  • Confirm the combat is genuinely pre-EoC. A few servers advertise "legacy" but run modified combat; log in and check it feels like the pre-2012 system.
  • Mind the client weight. A 718 client is heavier — on older hardware a 317 base runs smoother.

Pre-EOC RSPS — FAQ

What does pre-EoC mean?

It's RuneScape before the Evolution of Combat update of November 2012 — the click-to-attack system without abilities or the action bar. Pre-EoC servers rebuild that era.

What's the difference between 317 and 718?

They're client revisions — the build the client is based on. 317 (~2006) is the lighter, classic base most custom servers use; 718 (~2012) carries later skills and bosses on a heavier client. It's about combat feel and client era, not content age.

Does the revision number tell me the content?

No — that's the most common mix-up. The revision is the client foundation; a 718 server can run modern content. Judge the content separately from the number.

Is pre-EoC the same as OSRS?

No. OSRS is its own separate game; pre-EoC recreates the mainline RuneScape combat from 2007–2012. For today's Old School, see our OSRS servers.
